Guided by human-centred design, we deliver the platforms, digital services, and ICT support that keep the organisation running and the city moving.Central to this is our Enterprise Applications team, who are responsible for the stewardship, maintenance, and evolution of Council’s business-critical systems. Some of these systems are built on PowerBuilder and continue to play a vital role in Council operations.We’re seeking a Senior Software Engineer – PowerBuilder to take a lead role in developing, supporting, and modernising these applications. This role suits an experienced engineer who values system reliability and quality, while contributing to continuous improvement and future-focused change..Āu ake mahi | What you’ll do
- Lead the design, development, enhancement, and support of PowerBuilder applications used across the organisation.
- Take technical ownership of business-critical systems, ensuring they are stable, secure, maintainable, and fit for purpose.
- Diagnose and resolve complex application and production issues, working closely with support teams and business stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain integrations between PowerBuilder applications, databases, and other enterprise systems.
- Apply strong engineering discipline to legacy systems, including refactoring, performance tuning, and technical debt management.
- Collaborate with business analysts, testers, and product owners to translate requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Mentor and support other engineers, promoting good development practices and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to system modernisation initiatives, including supporting transition pathways to newer technologies where appropriate.
- Ensure adherence to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and support a bicultural approach to technology delivery.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Significant professional experience developing and supporting PowerBuilder applications in an enterprise environment.
- Strong experience with relational databases (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, or similar), including stored procedures, performance tuning, and data integrity.
- Solid understanding of enterprise application architecture, integration patterns, and transactional systems.
- Experience supporting long-lived, business-critical applications with a focus on reliability and maintainability.
- Familiarity with source control, release management, and structured change processes.
- Proven ability to analyse and resolve complex technical problems in production environments.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring or providing technical leadership to other developers.
- A continuous improvement mindset and a pragmatic approach to working with legacy systems.
- Experience with modernisation initiatives, APIs, or complementary technologies (such as .NET or integration platforms) is an advantage but not essential.
