Our work underpins the Long-Term Plan, helping Wellingtonians live, work, and play in an inclusive, sustainable, and creative capital. Guided by human-centred design, we deliver the platforms, digital services, and ICT support that keep the organisation running and the city moving.<span class=\"br\"><\/span>Central to this is our Enterprise Applications team, who are responsible for the stewardship, maintenance, and evolution of Council&#8217;s business-critical systems. Some of these systems are built on PowerBuilder and continue to play a vital role in Council operations.<span class=\"br\"><\/span>We&#8217;re seeking a Senior Software Engineer &#8211; PowerBuilder to take a lead role in developing, supporting, and modernising these applications. This role suits an experienced engineer who values system reliability and quality, while contributing to continuous improvement and future-focused change..<span class=\"br\"><\/span>\u0100u ake mahi | What you&#8217;ll do <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead the design, development, enhancement, and support of PowerBuilder applications used across the organisation.<\/li>\n<li>Take technical ownership of business-critical systems, ensuring they are stable, secure, maintainable, and fit for purpose.<\/li>\n<li>Diagnose and resolve complex application and production issues, working closely with support teams and business stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>Develop and maintain integrations between PowerBuilder applications, databases, and other enterprise systems.<\/li>\n<li>Apply strong engineering discipline to legacy systems, including refactoring, performance tuning, and technical debt management.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with business analysts, testers, and product owners to translate requirements into robust technical solutions.<\/li>\n<li>Mentor and support other engineers, promoting good development practices and knowledge sharing.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to system modernisation initiatives, including supporting transition pathways to newer technologies where appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure adherence to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and support a bicultural approach to technology delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What We&#8217;re Looking For<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bachelor&#8217;s or Master&#8217;s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.<\/li>\n<li>Significant professional experience developing and supporting PowerBuilder applications in an enterprise environment.<\/li>\n<li>Strong experience with relational databases (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, or similar), including stored procedures, performance tuning, and data integrity.<\/li>\n<li>Solid understanding of enterprise application architecture, integration patterns, and transactional systems.<\/li>\n<li>Experience supporting long-lived, business-critical applications with a focus on reliability and maintainability.<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with source control, release management, and structured change processes.<\/li>\n<li>Proven ability to analyse and resolve complex technical problems in production environments.<\/li>\n<li>Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>Experience mentoring or providing technical leadership to other developers.<\/li>\n<li>A continuous improvement mindset and a pragmatic approach to working with legacy systems.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with modernisation initiatives, APIs, or complementary technologies (such as .NET or integration platforms) is an advantage but not essential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why Join Us<\/b><br \/>\n       At Wellington City Council, you&#8217;ll have the chance to make a real impact on the city and its people.
